The imagining and the production of forms of Net has a long history. In ancient Rome, gladiators were armed with nets to entangle their opponents. In Oriental tradition, the gods were provided with nets to catch humans, either to draw them in or to bend them to their will. In Persian tradition, it was the mystic, who armed herself with a net in an attempt to capture God. Nets have been intrinsic to indigenous practices all over the world and are considered sacred because of the patient endurance their making and mending requires, and the embodied time and traditions they represent.
Virginia Reid and Nicky McLaughlin have created a series of glass and wire nets formed during a firing process. The heated glass melts to a liquid and fuses to the wire as it cools; integrating hundreds of pieces of hand-cut glass into one unified field. The nets invite the viewer to consider how they may be linked into a larger network, a larger field of being.
