For more than 20 years Lottie Consalvo has explored the limits of the human psych through painting, sculpture, video and performance. In her practice she reaches into the unknown in an attempt to qualify the known, bravely engaging with matter most would prefer to avoid. Consalvo examines arbitrary lines between the ‘real’ and the ‘unreal’, asking the question: we have a dream and when we wake up the dream isn’t real, why?
The exhibition Horizon pieces is a contemplation on the ethereal nature of universally ungraspable phenomena. Across two immersive performance-video works, Consalvo attempts the impossible: to materialise the horizon. Here she compares the endless, enigmatic, perpetual existence of the horizon with that of desire, longing and the human search for contentment. Consalvo says ‘no matter how hard we try, we are never able to comprehend the unseeable and grasp the intangible. But knowing this doesn’t waver our efforts.’
The artist acknowledges the traditional owners of the land in which these videos were made, the Awabakal and Worimi people.
