This exhibition of works on paper and film by Penny Evans refers to the artistās Indigenous (Kamilaroi/Gomeroi) heritage and is a reconstruction of her family identity subsequent to assimilationist policies in NSW. The works on paper can reveal and obscure at the same time, piecing and sewing together fractured cultural elements of identity. The film is based on a story of assimilation and references Evansās great grandmotherās story of covering up with talcum powder to disguise her Aboriginality. In the film a ritual cleansing takes place to reinvigorate her identity. The exhibition conveys a universal story of finding oneās authentic self. Penny Evans is a Lismore based artist.
