Jacob Boylan’s practice centres on Australian iconography, with a particular emphasis on nostalgia. Through the use of satire and parody, his work raises questions about national identity, focusing on the imagery of the recent past to explore our current digitised and globalised environment. Seeking contemporary relevance in the outmoded, Boylan’s playful formal arrangements of pop-cultural imagery are reminiscent of the work of the legendary American artist John Baldessari, who similarly conflates painting, photography and archival art to involve the viewer in a game of pictorial association, blurring form and content.
