Please join us for a lecture on Eric Avery, an important HIV artist, presented by ACON Community Health Promotion Officer, Ivan Crozier, in conjunction with HIV Testing Week.
Eric Avery has artwork in many public collections in the USA, the British Museum and the Wellcome Collection in the UK. This lecture covers Averyβs work with his psychiatric patients, showing how he used art in his medical practice. It looks at his politicisation of HIV, his use of gallery spaces for HIV health promotion, his portraits of HIV patients, HIV destigmatization, encouraging HIV testing, etc. Original prints from Ivan's collection will be on display at the gallery.
This lecture will be an opportunity to talk about HIV in a destigmatising way, tracing Averyβs work throughout the epidemic, and to emphasise current health promotion about HIV testing, treatment and prevention.
Free, all welcome, no bookings required.
The Gallery is wheelchair accessible. If you would like to discuss your access needs, please email linsey.gosper@lismore.nsw.gov.au or call 02 6627 4606.
