Lucille Martin, Naturally Selected
Gallery 1, 7 December 2007 - 19 January, 2008

Lucille Martin’s exhibition Naturally Selected exhibition responds to global consumerism and over consumption at the expense of nature. 12 species of Australian birds are among the recurring imagery in this exhibition. The birds, endangered due to their loss of habitat, are reproduced using new technologies. This choice of processes is a poignant reminder of the hand of man and technology in the danger of their extinction.
Despite the tragic nature of her themes, Martin is optimistic about what can come from making sustainable choices for the future of the environment. This optimism is apparent in her giving new form and beauty to her discarded objects. In Lace Trees 2007, multiple pieces of lace are sewn together to symbolize the fragility of old growth forests and fragile rainforests throughout the world. Other works use recycled wooden bowls to represent nature’s sacred geometric shapes, the fundamental beginning.
Martin’s works take us on an intimate and poetic journey, providing dynamic and sensitive engagement. She asks us think about her environmental themes and our role in addressing them.
