Catalogue Excerpt:
Introduction by Steven Alderton
Piccinini looks at the present rather than the future. Our world turns very fast – space travel, cyborgs, mobile phones, genetic engineering. The unfathomable has turned into the everyday, and what we once dreamed of is happening now. Piccinini is aware of this, and her work is not about making predictions as much as responding to stuff that already exists. Piccinini investigates the place where science is presently taking us and questions our role as caring and nurturing beings. The artist wants us to care and look after what humankind creates. These creatures need your love.
This exhibition includes drawings, sculptures, videos and digital photographs from the Nature’s Little Helpers, Panelwork, SO2, Car Nugget, Precautions, Videowork, Drawings, and Thicker Than Water series.
There are two biomorphic hi-tech lumps from Piccinini’s Car Nugget series and Surrogate – cute in the true sense of the word; she has big ears, warm brown eyes and a chubby disposition. The exacting drawings are surreal moments and small stories that build a world around the digital images and sculptures.
