Community support and patronage has always been crucial to the growth of Lismore Regional Gallery. The community supports the gallery through donation of artworks, cash or other assets, bequests or simply by volunteering their time. There are several ways to give to Lismore Regional Gallery, so it is worth consulting your financial advisor or solicitor to discuss the most suitable option for you. Donations to Lismore Regional Gallery are tax deductible (excluding bequests). Help Build the New Building
Lismore Regional Gallery began in 1953 as a result of the formation of the Lismore Arts Trust. The Gallery aims to build a new purpose built facility and your support is greatly appreciated. The Margaret Olley Arts Centre will become part of the new civic hub of Lismore. Naming rights are available to galleries, foyers, theatrette, screen gallery, kid's art centre and green. Help Build the Permanent Collection
The Lismore Regional Gallery Acquisition Fund established in 2007 is the Galleries major acquisition source for building the Collection. Donations to this fund are tax deductable and can either be in the form of cash donation or the donation of a work of art. The Gallery has established a Trust fund where interest off the capital is used to acquire new works. Your donation can be directed to any of the four Lismore Gallery Collection focus areas:
- Margaret Olley & Her Contemporaries
- Art from the Northern Rivers
- 21st Century Australian Art
- Aboriginal Art
Former Lismore Director, Steven Alderton asked Margaret Olley about the Olleys and the Temperleys around the region.
"Well there are alot of Olleys around Lismore. Sometimes when we were living on the Tweed we would go down and stay with Uncle Alf and Aunt Rose who lived out of Lismore up on the hill. Their house had big verandahs all the way around - you could almost see the lights of Lismore in the distance.
Those were idealic days, all those rolling hills. We would go to Lismore on the big shopping day. It was Friday. There was a certain block where people would meet, parade around and run into one another. I found it quite embarrassing because my relatives all knew one another and it was all this roaming around in the street and you would be introduced to somebody you didn't know. I had no idea who they were. All I knew is that they were distance relatives. Everybody seemed to know one another.
I had an idealic childhood even though the depression was on. It didn't cost you very much because you had your chooks, ducks, cows, made your own butter amongst other things, and we had a wonderful vegetable garden and fruit trees".
Patrons
Due to the generosity of the Gallery's patrons and benefactors, the permanent collection now features Australian artists such as Margaret Olley, Lloyd Rees, Albert Namatjira, Thea Proctor, Lindy Lee and Kevin Connor and well-known artists from the Northern Rivers region such as Jan Davis, Bronwyn Bancroft, Angus McDonald, James Guppy, Melissa Hirsch, Robyn Sweaney, Michael John Taylor, Patsy Hely and Tony Nankervis. The Gallery holds a unique collection of photographs giving prominence to the 1973 Nimbin Aquarius Festival, perhaps the most famous of the region's many local celebrations.

Gifts can also be made to the gallery as part of a will leaving behind a legacy for future generations to enjoy. Bequests can consist of precise amounts of money or assets such as art works, shares or real estate. A bequest could also encompass the proceeds of an insurance policy or proportions of estates after benefits have been allocated to next of kin. If you are considering bequeathing an artwork or portion of your estate to the gallery consult with your solicitor or financial advisor as to how best to proceed. Bequests are not tax deductable.
For example, suggested wording for gift in a will to the Gallery is: I give devise and bequeath [description of items, Cash Donation, % of my estate/$x /the rest and residue of my estate] to the Lismore Regional Gallery for the use and benefit of the Gallery at its absolute discretion and I confirm that a receipt from the General Manager of Lismore City Council shall be sufficient discharge for such gift.
